Installing this $6.00 item will prevent the destruction of a Hurd casement window crank gear costing ten times more.

Often when a casement is not properly shimmed during installation, the casement can suffer from sagging corners over time. The symptom is that when closing the sash, it wants to bump or rub at the latch side of the window. The user will either have to push the casement shut from the outside or typically, over stress the crank gear to bring the casement sash close enough to the latch to draw the sash in and lock the sash.

There is typically an easy, inexpensive and permanent cure for the bumping sash situation. Locating the inner most bottom hinge track screw, removing the screw and installing a track shim, part number HRP 015511 will resolve the problem. The shim will lift the inner hinge location. Because the Hurd sash is so rigid, the shim will lift the sash across the frame and allow the sash to smoothly close to the latching position without overly stressing the crank assembly.

After installing the shim and replacing the screw, it is important to fill any void created under the track with a good quality exterior silicone. Be sure to wipe away excess silicone so as to prevent if from coming in contact with the sash or simply becoming unsightly.
